Each new year brings a new chance to start over, start fresh, and start taking back something…in my car it was my health. I have had more than a few health scares over the years. Surviving cancer. Diabetes. Anxiety. Frankly you would think I would have done this a long time ago. I guess I just wasn’t ready. But I was this year. Now, you know me as the “Tattooed Wonder Woman” and the “lover of all things coffee, wine, and chocolate” but what you might not have known is that I was also addicted to soda and cigarettes. I say addicted because that is exactly what I was. Thanks to some creative drink substitutes (hello, tea) and the support of family and friends I am 21 days into my journey to a new me.

I Can’t Quit Smoking.

I have been telling myself that for years. I believed that. I didn’t like smoking, but I couldn’t quit. Correction…I wouldn’t quit. By the grace of God a switch went off in my head one day late last year. I tried quitting several times, but after a few hours or days I would cave. I kept telling myself that it was okay, I could try again. It wasn’t okay. Sure, I could try again, but what good was that going to do me if I really didn’t believe I could quit.

I quit cold turkey.

My last cigarette was at 11:57 pm mountain standard time on December 31st, 2013.  I didn’t even finish it. I couldn’t. I didn’t want to.

I have no regrets.

I feel better than ever. While I know not everyone can quit cold turkey, there is help. It is no more expensive to see a doctor or get a nicotine patch, gum, or prescription than what you already throw away on cigarettes. Think about it.

The key is support. I was lucky to have a great support system in my best friend and my husband. If you need a support system, I will be here for you. You can do it, trust me when I say if I could, you can. I have the will power of a three year old in front of fresh baked chocolate cookies.

How Bad Can Soda Be?

Seriously, I’m not going to go into a long drawn out monologue here of education. Soda is bad. Period. Regular, diet, sugar free…its all bad. Google it.

Ironically quitting soda was harder than quitting cigarettes. I couldn’t just switch to drinking water..I wanted flavor.

Tea, Tea, Wonderful Tea.

My solution was tea. Walmart has a massively huge, wonderful selection of tea. My personal favorite is Bigelow Tea and all their many delicious flavors. The awesome thing I love about Bigelow is that you can get bonus packs with 4 extra teabags. You know me, the more I get get for the least amount of money the better.

How I Made The Switch:

I enjoy tea hot or cold, and when the New Year rolled around it was still a little chilly here in Arizona, so I had no issues enjoying my tea steaming hot all day long.

Now that we are getting closer to the end of the month it has warmed up around here. It’s a nice 70 degrees today, so I felt the need for some Iced Pomegranate Green Tea.

I love the mint flavor as well.
